More than 55% of Yorba Linda's General Fund comes from property taxes and only about 17% from sales tax. That narrow base means the services we rely on depend heavily on home values. I want more of what our neighbors need close to home: dining, shopping, and services that fit our community and broaden how the city pays for itself. During my career in public service I managed a small business assistance office and opened three satellite locations. I learned what it takes to make government easy to work with. I'll bring residents, business owners, and property owners together, fill vacancies, and deliver on the promise of a stronger local economy. I'll focus on practical solutions for families, seniors, and local businesses, embracing thoughtful improvements that benefit both today's residents and future generations. Yorba Lindans approved Measure JJ, the Local Control Measure, by more than 90%. I'll ensure the plan is built as intended, with housing placed appropriately and every project held accountable for traffic, parking, infrastructure, safety, and neighborhood character. Moving around our city can be a daily frustration and a real risk in an emergency. The city's updated Safety Element identifies neighborhoods with only one way out, including three in our highest fire hazard zone, and the evacuation map routes most of us onto La Palma and six other major streets. I'll revisit the feasibility study for that corridor and press for the improvements it identifies. I also support more visible crosswalks, especially near our schools; maintaining the more than 100 miles of trails our hikers, bikers, and equestrians share; and the city's e-bike ordinance and expanded Ride Ready training. Good government works best in the daylight. On the Planning Commission, I visited every project location on the agenda, because government should meet people where they live and work. Some of the best ideas come from the people a decision affects. I'll make the effort to listen to residents, put major decisions in plain language before any vote, and make every taxpayer dollar deliver results. Our largest contracts, and the amendments and change orders that follow them, deserve the same scrutiny as any other spending decision. Some of the best ideas come from the people a decision affects. On the Planning Commission, not only did I read the staff reports, I visited every site. I learned a lot from residents explaining how projects would impact them.
So please tell me what's going on where you live. A problem that needs fixing, a concern you have, a stretch of trail that needs improvement, or something about our city you think is working well. I read every message and answer every question.
I spent the first 17 years of my life in a tiny little sandbox of a community called Trona, California, on the road to Death Valley. I wanted more than Trona could offer, so I made a plan, got jobs and saved money, studied hard, and graduated class valedictorian. I paid my way through Cal Poly Pomona and finished in four years with a degree in chemical engineering, with honors. Hard work and fiscal responsibility are baked into my DNA.
Yorba Linda is my hometown now. It's where I got married, raised three children, and enmeshed myself in this community. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've been given here, and as my way of saying thanks I've given back through volunteering as a youth sports coach and with the United Way.
I also served as your Planning Commissioner for more than 11 years. Not only was I appointed by the City Council, I was reappointed three times and my fellow commissioners elected me Chair for three terms. That background means I won't need training wheels coming onto the Council. I have the knowledge and the skill set to hit the ground running from day one.
My experience as a resident, father, husband, volunteer, and city official has given me a practical perspective on this city. Yorba Linda is a wonderful place to live. I want to build on what makes it special by offering a fresh perspective and new ideas.
As your Planning Commissioner, I tried to embody that spirit of involvement and participation. Not only did I visit every location that had an item before the commission, I met with applicants, neighbors, business owners, interested parties, and candidly, everyone who wanted to meet with me. I learned that some of the best ideas come from the people directly affected by a decision. That openness, dedication, and responsiveness are the central tenets of my approach to being your elected representative.
I also want to provide greater opportunities for our neighbors to be informed of and to participate in city government. Our neighbors deserve earlier notice, clearer information, and a real chance to weigh in before major decisions are made rather than after. And our spending, our contracts, and our major projects deserve closer oversight, which is the kind of work I did for the County of Orange writing planning documents, preparing bid packages, and managing contracts. I hold an MBA with an accounting emphasis and spent a year auditing taxes for the state, so I'm comfortable reading a budget and the contracts behind it. I'll work to see that Yorba Linda actively engages all of its residents as we move forward.
Yorba Linda has the potential to offer more to our neighbors. As your councilperson, my goal is to engage in a collaborative process that gives our neighbors more options here at home. This is a diverse community that can support more retail and dining, and a stronger retail presence would give all of us more to enjoy close to home while materially improving our city’s balance sheet. That's money that can go back into city services, programs, and benefits, while building on what already makes Yorba Linda the special home it is.
